 Citadelic festival 2024

JUNE 2 - 21H

artist in residence
day 4:  Evan Parker / Grégoire Tirtiaux / Toma Gouband (UK / BE / FR)

           a legend of improvised music

Evan Parker is considered one of the pioneers of European improvisation and free music and one of the most important saxophone players in the post-Coltrane era. He has developed a highly personal style by expanding techniques on the saxophone. His mastery of circular breathing has influenced several generations of saxophonists. Grégoire Tirtiaux is one of them, and he, in turn, has been inspired by continuous breathing.

This encounter between two breaths, one flowing through the soprano saxophone and the other through the baritone, will be accompanied by the mystical percussion of Toma Gouband, sourced from the tops of trees and gathered from the depths of rivers.

Throughout his career, Parker has been a tireless innovator, constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible within improvised music. His influence extends beyond the realm of jazz, impacting various genres such as contemporary classical music and electronic music. Evan Parker remains an influential figure in the global experimental music community, celebrated for his virtuosity, innovation, and uncompromising artistic vision.
